What is man?
He’s just a collection of chemicals,
with delusions of grandeur.
— Ayn Rand (Atlas Shrugged)
Periclean Athens
He attends the Ekklesia (Assembly) on the Pnyx Hill. Thousands of Athenians gather, sitting on stone benches, as speakers mount the bema to argue policy.
If it’s festival season, he heads to the Theater of Dionysus. Thousands pack the stone tiers to watch new tragedies or comedies.
Festivals are constant. The Panathenaia celebrates Athena with athletic contests and poetry. A grand procession to the Acropolis, carrying a robe for the goddess’ statue.
At home, he eats bread, olives, figs, and fish with his family. Wine is mixed with water at a symposium, where friends recline, sing, play games, and debate philosophy late into the night.
Hegelian Ascetic
Man is the highest manifestation of the absolute,
(thereby art should pay more attention to man).
