Many early American intellectuals and founders were influenced by Deism.
Deism is the belief that:
A creator (God) exists
The creator established natural laws that govern the universe
God does not intervene in human affairs through miracles or revelation
Reason and observation of nature — not scripture — are the primary ways to understand God
It emerged strongly during the Enlightenment (17th–18th centuries).
Think of the metaphor commonly used then:
God as the watchmaker who builds the universe, winds it up, and lets it run.
